ONGOING
PROJECTS
Near Real
Time Flood Mapping of Assam
Background
Flood layers
derived from satellite data
acquired by Radarsat (if cloud
persists) otherwise Indian Remote
Sensing Satellite data (if cloud
free) is sent through the e-mail
to our Centre from the Water
Resource division NRSA, Hyderabad.
This flood layer is digitally
integrated in other information
layers viz. base map of Assam
along with district boundary
and village boundary layer.
Necessary inundated area statistics
are calculated district wise
for onward distribution to line
departments.
It is proposed
to make a "Post Flood Damage
Assessment in Assam" using
various layers like landuse/landcover,
village boundaries, roads, railways
and attribute data (socio- economic,
demographic, crop conditions
etc.) to derive spatial as well
as statistical information of
the damage done by floods. Recently
ARSAC has completed generating
databases (infrastructure, landuse/landcover,
hydrogeomorphology and other
administrative boundaries along
with socio-economic data) for
four districts of Assam viz.
Kamrup, Golaghat, Dibrugarh
and Tinsukia. Databases for
remaining districts are being
generated at NE-SAC, Shillong
and RRSSC, Kharagpur. Finally,
all the databases are integrated
at RRSSC (N). The project is
being done in collaboration
with Department of Space, Govt.
of India. The databases created
are extensively used along with
flood inundation layer for onward
submission to the line departments.
It is a regular programme on
yearly basis.
Objectives
To disseminate flood inundation
status (maps and area statistics)
to various user departments
on near real time basis for
proper relief operations as
well as for post flood damage
assessment.
To demonstrate the capabilities
of space based systems and services
using Information Technology
(IT) tools, for near real time
flood monitoring and damage
assessment.
Activity
During flood season inundation
status are provided to the Govt.
Departments on regular basis
