Disaster Management

Disaster is generally defined as “An event natural or man-made, sudden or progressive which impacts with such severity that the affected community has to respond by taking exceptional measures.” Natural disasters include natural phenomena of earthquake, flood, cyclone, draught, thunderstorm etc., while manmade disasters include fire incidences, accidents, civil unrest etc. which are triggered by human activities. Since past two decades the losses due to disasters are increasing globally. In fact, there is a clear link between degraded environment and disaster as environmental degradation further aggravates the impacts of disasters. Our state is also perennially facing the problems of flood, river bank erosion, sand casting, soil erosion and slope destabilization in hill area, earthquake, thunderstorm (particularly in April –May, which is locally called as Bordoisila), man-wildlife conflict, along with manmade disasters like fire incidences, road accidents and social unrest leading to human and property loss.
Preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation are four major components of disaster management. Under this subtheme, child scientists are expected to undertake small project work on all or any one of these aspects.

Project Ideas :
Documenting human activities related to environmental degradation that may cause disaster, studies to find potential disaster prone sites in a locality, vulnerable groups, person with special needs, mapping of existing resources for developing action oriented plan to manage and mitigate the consequences of disasters etc. Here, child scientists can also make use of existing knowledge of Science and Technology and use innovative approach/strategies and new management methodologies in devising and implementing action oriented strategies/plan/processes within the overall paradigm of sustainable development.
